There are several factors to consider when hiring a voice actor for medical narration. These include knowing your audience, ensuring the talent you hire is experienced in this field, and undertaking a thorough casting process.
In this article, we’ll go through each of these in depth, so that you’ll know exactly how to hire the right voice actor for your medical narration voiceover project.
Medical narration is a specialized form of voiceover used to convey information for the healthcare industry.
It is most often used for healthcare commercials, pharmaceutical presentations, patient education videos, medical device demonstrations, and hospital training.
As a result, it generally targets healthcare audiences such as doctors, medical students, and hospital employees.
That said, some medical narrations target patients or other non-professionals.
Por exemplo, você pode enviar informações de tratamento aos pacientes on-line.
Or you could be planning a TV or radio commercial promoting a medical or pharmaceutical product to the general public.
Though medical narration shares some core characteristics with general voice acting, there are also several differences.
As such, a company training video, public service announcement, and medical narration will require three very different voice actors.
So, let’s take a look at what you need to consider when looking for a voiceover artist for your medical narration.

It is important to understand the audience that will be listening to your medical narration, as this will direct you in choosing the right tone, pacing, and delivery style.
In most cases, the voice actor will usually be expected to communicate complex health information in a clear, engaging, and confident way.
Even still, not every medical project will sound the same.
An academic narration, for example, will typically have a calm, measured tone that matches the complexity of the subject.
Voice over talent who specialize in e-learning may be a good fit for this kind of project because they have experience with long-form narration that often involves explaining complicated information clearly.
If your narration is intended for patients or other laypeople, it will likely require a warmer, more casual tone.
Medical information can be overwhelming, so an approachable, empathetic voice helps these kinds of audiences stay engaged and retain important details.
So, before beginning your casting process, define exactly who will be listening and what you want them to understand and take away from the narration.
Once you’ve done that, you’ll be in a much stronger position to choose the right voice actor for whatever medical narration project you’re planning.

The voice actor you hire must be experienced in medical narration because this will significantly reduce the risk of mistakes and help you produce a wholly professional final recording more quickly.
Medical narration comes with several unique challenges, with the most obvious being pronunciation.
Medical scripts are filled with technical terminology, which can be daunting to voice actors with no experience in this field.
Even talent that regularly voices projects for the medical industry may need guidance when encountering unfamiliar medical terms.
Experienced narrators generally know how to research the proper pronunciation of medical phrases, pharmaceutical names, and even the Latin words often found in medical texts.
They also understand, however, that memorizing medical terms isn’t enough; the words must sound effortless rolling off their tongue.
It’s this kind of fluent delivery that helps reinforce the credibility of the narration.
That said, your chosen voice actor won’t need to have a medical degree to step up to the mic and discuss certain medical topics.
If there’s a lot of unfamiliar terminology in your project, creating a pronunciation guide or involving at least one medical professional who knows the correct pronunciation in the casting process makes sense.
Otherwise, serious mistakes can pop up.
One famous example of this came in the much-loved 1980s movie, Back to the Future, where Doc Brown pronounces the word “gigawatt” with a J sound.

While contemporary audiences are more familiar with the “giga-” prefix and recognize the mistake immediately, the pronunciation went unnoticed during production because few people were familiar with the term at that time.
Although this example comes from entertainment rather than healthcare, it highlights how easily pronunciation mistakes can slip through.
So, avoid such errors by looking only for voiceover artists who have experience in the medical field and who are comfortable asking for help if they encounter any words they’re unfamiliar with.

It is important to choose several voice actor alternatives when casting, as this will give you the best chance of finding the voice that perfectly matches your script, audience, and goals.

If possible, try to hire someone who will be available to return for future sessions.
Medical approaches and recommendations are constantly responding to new information, so it’s critical to give yourself the option to update your narration if needed.
If you’re working with Voice Crafters, we’re happy to recommend experienced, vetted voice actors who specialize in medical narration and can be available for future pickup sessions, making it easier for you to keep your content fresh.
Otherwise, you’ll have to find a brand new voiceover artist and start a second project from scratch for any future changes.

A medical voice actor should deliver narration in a clear, confident way, pronouncing complex terminology correctly, while adapting their tone to suit different audiences.
Not necessarily. A medical background can be beneficial, but finding a voice actor with experience in recording medical narration, who can pronounce difficult medical terms with ease, is generally more important.
Yes, it’s always a good idea to request a custom audition as this will allow you to hear how a voice actor performs your specific script, making it much easier to decide whether they’re a good fit or not.

It is a market that has shown an increase in demand currently here in Brazil. I’ve been working as a voice over for over 20 years and I recently started recording this type of voiceover, target audience. The article is excellent, I really agree with everything that has been said. Because it is a target audience, such as doctors, medicine, students, the voiceover needs to be well targeted and cleaner, without accents or slang. Mastering words, often even scientific terms, is not easy, pronunciation of laboratories and drug compounds is where I find a certain difficulty, which can be very well discussed and addressed with the client before recording so as not to make mistakes. Really because of the pronunciations, the style, the size of the recording can make the locution a little tiring. About the tone of voice, I believe it can change according to the freedom that the text offers, the type of medication and its use. My brand is the smile on the corner of the lip, a mature voice and a hint of friendliness has been successful with my clients. Thanks for posting and learning!
Thank you very much for your feedback Andreia!
