The reach of American English extends far beyond the US borders. It’s the preferred version of English for many learners across the world. In fact, 70% of worldwide English speakers favor the American variant.
Surprisingly, the USA doesn’t have an official language at the federal level. However, 32 states have declared it the official language locally.
American English originated from British English. It was, of course, brought to the country by the first European settlers. In the 400 years since the initial landings, it’s developed into a language of its own.
American English and British English are very similar and are often used interchangeably. But there are differences in accent, pronunciation, spelling, and grammar. For example, “I’ll call you on your cell phone later” in American English could be “I’ll ring you on your mobile phone in a bit” in British English.

American English is the default accent for global English-language content, especially in technology, e-commerce, and corporate communications. Audiences across North America, Asia, and MENA associate the General American accent with credibility and clarity. If your content targets a US audience or needs a neutral English voice that reads as mainstream, American talent is the natural starting point.
General American is the accent most commonly used in broadcast and corporate voice over. It carries no strong regional features and is universally understood across the country. Regional accents like Southern, New York, Midwestern, Californian, or Boston add local character and work for specific audiences, character voices, or advertising that leans into a geographic identity.
